Behind the Scenes: An Inside Interview with Ilinx

Ilinx is an up-and-coming, independent band based in South Lanarkshire who are inspired by the likes of The Beatles, Paramore, and David Bowie.

The band consists of lead singer Perla Wood, guitarist Sarah Lilley, bassist Charlie Rivans, drummer Callum Faulds and pianist Beau Christie.

I had the chance to chat with all five band members about their experiences as a group so far, including the challenges they face as an independent band and releasing their own music.

The band members all met through school, and starting a band in high school comes with its challenges. Time and equipment are the biggest problems for the band, along with not being able to commit full-time. When it comes to rehearsing, they can’t always achieve the sound that they want.

Sarah said: “A lot of the time, we rehearse in school, and the equipment we’ve got at school isn’t brilliant. We can’t get a good sound, or we don’t have enough mics for everyone, or there’s an instrument we can’t hear. It’s hard for us to hear what we would sound like at a gig when we’re performing in a classroom.

“There are many rehearsal spaces and rehearsal rooms that you can hire at very low prices in Glasgow, and I think that is probably something we’ll start looking at soon because they’re very good and accessible.”

Ilinx currently only play covers at their gigs. When asked about the possibility of making their own music, Sarah said: “It’s something that we’ve talked about quite a lot for a while. However, because of the stage we’re at -being in school and doing exams- there’s a lot we’d like to do but we don’t necessarily have the time.”

Additionally, Beau said: “We love doing covers at our gigs. It’s more enjoyable to do a song that already exists and you know is going to be well received by a crowd. Plus, it’s quicker to learn ten covers than even to write and learn two originals; that takes much longer.”

They all agreed that original music will happen soon, but for now, they are sticking to the covers until they finish school.

Ilinx are most definitely a band to look out for. You can see them play live at The Classic Grand Lounge in Glasgow on March 13th.
